NY Housing Resources: Homelessness Prevention

A rental assistance supplement to help individuals and families find and keep housing. The program is administered by the Department of Social Services (DSS), which includes both the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) and the Human Resources Administration (HRA).

Various homeless prevention services and aftercare services for families and individuals exiting NYC DHS shelter to permanent housing or at risk of homelessness. Services include guidance on obtaining public benefits, emergency rental assistance, education and job placement, personal finances and money management, relocation, and short-term financial assistance. Offers a wide range of information on housing options for older people from independent living to assistance with aging in place.

Cash assistance during an emergency to pay basic bills and rent.

Enables families and individuals to transition from shelters and move in with family or friends by providing monthly payments to the host family for up to 12 months.

Department of Homeless Services (DHS) case managers and housing specialists identify clients who may be eligible for SOTA. The program provides one year of rent to eligible Department of Homeless Services (DHS) clients to move to other New York State counties or to another state, Puerto Rico, or Washington, D.C.

Supportive housing is affordable housing with supportive social services in place for individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Prospective tenants must work with a pre-approved social service or health provider to apply.

A faith-based non-profit providing transitional and supportive housing and services to adults in crisis, regardless of beliefs or religious affiliation. Call 212-226-6214.

Runs several transitional housing sites in Brooklyn including case management services. Also runs the BCS Shower Bus, a mobile care unit that travels throughout Brooklyn, providing unhoused residents with hot showers and toiletries.

Call the crisis Intervention hotline at 888-358-2384 Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm. They provide extensive information on supportive housing and programs assisting individuals and families existing the shelter system to obtain housing.
